Mathematics Education (6-12), BA

Mathematics Outcomes

Students completing the baccalaureate program in Mathematics will:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of the ideas, structures, and practices of mathematics including solving real-world applications and the use of technological tools.
  2. think mathematically and communicate mathematics in a variety of modes.
  3. make connections within mathematics, explore connections between faith and mathematics, and relate mathematics to other disciplines.
  4. be prepared for careers in mathematics (education, actuarial science, data analysis, etc.) and graduate study in mathematics and related fields.

Mathematics University Competencies

The mathematics program supports the university through serving students and departments in obtaining mathematics competencies. These competencies are delivered through the general education program and are documented below as two key areas. Students completing a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science should be able to:

  1. draw and support appropriate conclusions through quantitative reasoning using models or data.
  2. demonstrate competency in algebraic skills and reasoning.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Art in Mathematics Education (6-12)

The Mathematics Education program follows the comprehensive- major pattern. It embraces a broad base of mathematics and prepares the student to teach in the school setting. This major requires completion of the professional education courses included in the secondary education section of the Teacher Education program. Secondary education program requirements can be found here .
