The Minor in Pre-Counseling introduces students to the fundamental principles of counseling, the counseling process, and mental health and wellness awareness while emphasizing the application of introductory helping skills applicable across a variety of disciplines. It enhances undergraduate education by equipping students with essential communication and interpersonal skills relevant across fields such as healthcare, education, human services, and ministry.

The curriculum encompasses mental health and wellness, providing a solid foundation for understanding psychological well-being, and the dynamics of helping relationships that prioritize empathy, active listening, and supportive communication. Furthermore, students learn about trauma-informed care and crisis response, equipping them with effective strategies to assist individuals in distress. Rooted in the Christian value of service to others, this minor underscores the importance of compassion and support in promoting the well-being of individuals and communities. Ultimately, it fosters empathy and understanding, enriching students’ academic profiles and enhancing their effectiveness in future professional roles.

Designed to prepare students for entry-level helping careers, advanced graduate work, or to complement coursework from various majors, this minor does not replace the graduate-level professional training required for licensure as a professional counselor.
