EDUC 3304 - 3-6 Integrated Literacy And Assessment

3-6 Integrated Literacy and Assessment extends literacy theory to the intermediate grades to focus on language development, create a literacy-rich classroom environment for middle level students, assess and evaluate literacy learning, and provide differentiation and interventions for learners in 3-6 classrooms.  Based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), evidence-based intermediate literacy instruction includes age-appropriate skills and strategies, content area literacy, and integration of reading / writing / listening / speaking / viewing / visual representation.  This course is grounded in major research findings associated with the Science of Reading, Structured Literacy teaching principles and elements as well as an understanding of the distinguishing characteristics of ways reading disabilities vary in presentation and degree, including dyslexia. This course includes a four-week practicum in which students observe, assess, diagnose literacy acquisition problems, tutor individual student writers, and teach whole group and small group literacy lessons.
