CHEM 1104 - General Chemistry I


Credit Hours: 4

Serving as the first of a two-semester general chemistry sequence, this course will cover fundamental facts, concepts, and theories of chemistry. Mathematical skills will be developed and strengthened. Topics include matter, measurements, calculations, elements, atomic theory, atomic mass and the mole, ionic and molecular compounds, types of bonding, types of reactions, limiting reagents, percent yield, solutions, gases, quantum mechanics, orbitals and electrons, electronic structure, atomic periodicity, Lewis theory, solution chemistry, and properties of gases. Heavy emphasis will be placed on teaching the student problem-solving abilities.

Prerequisite: MATH 1223  (or equivalent) or instructor permission.
Notes: Three hours of lecture and one three-our laboratory session per week.
