CHEM 3213 - Organic Chemistry II

Credit Hours: 3

Serving as the second of a two-semester organic chemistry sequence, this course will build on the fundamentals of organic structures, bonding, acid/base chemistry, stereochemistry, and energetic considerations taught in CHEM 3003 . These fundamentals will be applied to studying the properties and reactivity of a variety of functional groups (alkynes, alcohols, ethers, amines, and carbonyl-containing compounds), assessing reaction mechanisms by determining the regiochemical and stereochemical outcomes, explaining the energetics of aromaticity and conjugated pi-systems, and relating the principles of organic chemistry to other areas like biochemistry. Ultimately, students will be able to provide complex multi-step synthetic routes to interconvert all functional groups covered across the organic chemistry sequence.

Prerequisite: CHEM 3003  and CHEM 3012 .
Corequisite: CHEM 3211 .

Notes: There will be three hours of lecture per week.
Offered: Spring
Modality: In-Person
